Hugh Jackman Teases 'Very Different' Wolverine 3

Next year, Hugh Jackman’s final onscreen appearance in the X-Men universe will hit big screens with the still-untitled Wolverine 3. The film will be a reunion between Jackman and director James Mangold, following their collaboration together on 2013’s The Wolverine and will notably be the first R-rated solo Wolverine outing. While details from the project itself are still sparse, it is said to be a loose adaptation of Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan story from the comics with Jackman portraying a much older version of Logan than fans have seen before.

The film wrapped principal photography in mid-August, and since then nothing official from the film has been made public. While Mangold teased the release of some official footage recently, there was never any indication of when fans could expect their first taste of the upcoming third installment. Hugh Jackman has provided an update on the film’s status, though, and not only promised a much different Wolverine film than what’s come before, but he also gave a specific indication of when fans should expect to see or hear something from the project.

The news came during Jackman’s recent interview with ET, where the actor promised that after his recent meeting with Mangold about the film, there should be something coming out for it within the next week or so:

“I just saw Jim Mangold today, he’s editing away and finishing that, I’m very very excited about it. There’s going to be some stuff coming out in the next week or so, that’s all I’ll say. I’m really trying to, like I’m not good, I’m the kind of person who tells everybody everything. Basically, it’s going to be very different, very different in tone, and hopefully different to anything we’ve done.”

There is certainly still enough time for the marketing and promotional materials for the film to start ramping up in the months before its March 2017 release, and it’s possible that the first trailer could premiere later this year with Fox’s next major release, Assassin’s Creed, at the end of December. With the film being Jackman’s farewell to the character, it shouldn’t be difficult for 20th Century Fox to put a large focus on the movie when it comes time to start rolling out more trailers and posters.

Aside from it being Jackman’s swan song as Logan, though, it will also be a farewell to the character in the current X-Men cinematic universe, which should imbue the film with a much different and more somber tone than some of Logan’s previous onscreen appearances. Rumors surrounding the project have indicated that it could feature the introduction of X-23 as well — often referred to as a female version of Wolverine who goes on to serve as Logan’s replacement following his death in the comics — which means that Wolverine 3 could act not only as a departure for one of the X-Men franchise’s biggest original players, but also help to usher in a new era of live-action mutants.

Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017, March 2, 2018, and June 29, 2018. Deadpool 2, Gambit, New Mutants and X-Force are currently in development.
