New Suicide Squad Viral Website Reveals 'Secret' DC Files

Suicide Squad became a commercial juggernaut at the box office this past summer, partly due to a stellar marketing campaign featuring thrilling teaser trailers, trendy music tie-ins and plenty of strategically placed images of Jared Leto’s Joker, despite that character’s limited presence in the movie itself. As such, it’s not surprising that the marketing for the home media release is taking an unconventional and potentially exciting approach in an attempt to replicate that financial success.

Now, in anticipation of the release of Suicide Squad on Digital HD, DVD and Blu-ray, Warner Bros. have launched a viral marketing website for the film. The site promises to lift the lid on some of the secrets behind the DC Extended Universe, including its “Worst. Heroes. Ever.”

The Suicide Squad site, which can be visited at, poses as the official database of the fictional A.R.G.U.S. agency and contains several folders, all of which are restricted with the exception of ‘Taskforce_X’ and ‘Meta_Humans’. Naturally, the ‘Taskforce_X’ file contains information on each of the Task Force X members – and although most of the other information is off-limits at the moment, WB promise that more folders will become accessible in the future.

If a folder containing information on Meta Humans sounds familiar, that may just be due to Bruce Wayne having access to a similar database in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice; one which conveniently allowed him to introduce the audience to Aquaman, Flash And Cyborg and sow the seeds of the forthcoming Justice League movie at the same time. The files from that scene, however, represented the handiwork of Lex Luthor and didn’t have anything to do with A.R.G.U.S., or the ‘Advanced Research Group for Uniting Super-humans’ to give the agency its proper DC title.

Although opinion on Suicide Squad was certainly polarizing, the new viral site represents an effort from WB to offer fans some additional, free content to compliment the release of the movie itself and this attention to detail is likely to be appreciated by the many movie-goers who did enjoy the film.

However, others may see the website as symptomatic of something Suicide Squad was criticized for – being more focused on marketing impact and public image than actually delivering a quality film. Initial reaction to the film’s trailers were highly positive and the buzz surrounding its release inescapable, but much of that initial enthusiasm was dented by the movie’s weak reviews. This new viral campaign could be seen as another example of WB trying to compensate for the fact their movie just didn’t live up to the expectations of many.

Suicide Squad will be released digitally on November 15th 2016 and on Blu-ray and DVD on 13th December 2016.
