Ocean's Eight Set Photos: Cate Blanchett & Sandra Bullock Plot a Heist

Sequels, spin-offs, and reboots have become a huge part of both the movie and TV industries, and one of the newest projects is a sort of spin-off of a reboot. The 2001 Ocean’s Eleven, a remake of the ’60s Rat Pack film of the same name starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, spawned two sequels and now has given rise to the spin-off heist film, Ocean’s Eight, starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.

The new film will keep it in the family of the 2001 reboot, with Bullock playing the ex-con sister of Clooney’s Danny Ocean. Blanchett will play right-hand woman to Bullock, similar to Pitt’s role as Rusty Ryan. The all-star, all-female cast also includes Anne Hathaway (Interstellar), Rihanna (Battleship), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story), Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Helena Bonham Carter (Cinderella), and Awkwafina (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising).

Though the film won’t debut until summer 2018, filming has already begun in New York and ComingSoon.net has pictures from the set. While Bullock is wearing a conservative black outfit and trenchcoat that her no-nonsense cop character in Miss Congeniality would be comfortable in, Blanchett is decked out in a more flamboyant green velvet suit and leopard-print coat.

As you can also see from Bullock’s Instagram post above, the set photos don’t give us much to go on, with the two stars walking together down the street and then chatting in a coffee shop. This could be part of their planning stage, however, as we do know that the plot of Ocean’s Eight involves the duo plotting to steal a necklace from the Met Ball and then pinning the theft on a “villainous gallery owner.” The two actresses do look very comfortable together, which is a good sign for a film franchise that depends heavily on the charm and chemistry of its characters.

Ocean’s Eight director Gary Ross is also planning to maintain the style and tone of Steven Soderbergh’s work on the previous films, which is another aspect in the spin-off’s favor. Women rarely get to take much of a role in heist films, and it should be entertaining to see this intriguingly eclectic cast with both dramatic and comedic skills have fun commanding a stylishly quirky caper film.

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for further updates on Ocean’s Eight as they come our way!

Ocean’s Eight opens in U.S. theaters on June 8th, 2018.
