This year, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman made her DCEU debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Next year, following the positive fan and critical reception to her turn as the character, Gadot will be following that debut up with not only a return in director Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but also in her own standalone Wonder Woman film. After years of fans waiting to see it happen, Diana is finally getting to hold her own in the same live-action cinematic universe as her male DC counterparts.

The character made her comic book debut back in 1941, and has had a long history of animated and live-action adaptations in the years since. It looks like fans won’t just be getting a movie starring Wonder Woman in the next few years though, but also one about her creation as well.

Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to Professor Marston & The Wonder Women, a film based on the uncommon true story behind the creation of the Wonder Woman character. The film has already begun production, coming from writer and director Angela Robinson, and stars Luke Evans (The Girl on the Train), Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3), and Bella Heathcote (The Neon Demon).

The film will follow the lives of Dr. William Moulton Marston (Evans), the Harvard psychologist who created Wonder Woman, as well as his wife Elizabeth (Hall) and their polyamorous relationship with Olive Byrne (Heathcote), one of Marston’s former students. Both women proved to be highly influential in the character of Diana, with significant input coming from Elizabeth during her creation, and Marston infusing the character with the same kind of feminist ideals and morals that came from both women.

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women will apparently focus on the controversy that Marston faced after creating Wonder Woman from some groups of the public, while he, Elizabeth, and Olive all had to conceal the relationship and family that could have ruined all of their reputations.

This news also comes following the announcement several weeks ago that 20th Century Fox would be developing a new film based on the life of Stan Lee as well, which would envision the Marvel creator as a superhero himself. While Professor Marston & The Wonder Women sounds like a much more straightforward biopic than that, it does seem like as comic book films are continuing to grow more and more popular now, film studios may begin to mine more and more the interesting histories surrounding a number of the comic book medium’s more significant characters and their creators.

Depending on the release date strategy that Sony ends up going with for this film as well, it’s entirely possible that Professor Marston & The Wonder Women could be coming at the perfect time, when the public’s interest in Wonder Woman as a character reaches its peak next year. The film’s cast is led by two strong veterans in Hall and Evans, and a promising up-and-comer in Heathcote – and with an interesting and timely premise going for it, this could wind up being one of the more interesting biopics in production right now.

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women does not currently have a release date. We’ll keep you updated as production on the project continues.
